Ten foreign-based players have been called up for next weekend’s 2015 Africa Cup of Nations second preliminary round, first leg against Chad.

Making a return to the team will be battle-hardened South Africa-based striker Esau Kanyenda who has scored six league goals for his Polokwane City this season.

Notable names missing from the list are Mozambique-based goalkeeper Simplex Nthala and striker Zicco Mkanda, who performed poorly in the friendly match against Zimbabwe’s Warriors which the Flames lost 4-1. Lanky forward and last season’s Super League Golden Boot Award winner Ishmael Thindwa has also been dropped.

Football Association of Malawi (FAM) chief executive officer Suzgo Nyirenda, said Thindwa has been dropped to allow him settle down at his Zimbabwean top league side Caps United.

Others that have been called up are captain Moses Chavula, Chimango Kayira (Mozambique), Joseph Kamwendo (DRC), Limbikani Mzava, Harry Nyirenda, Robert Ng’ambi, Gabadinho Mhango, Atusaye Nyondo and Robin Ngalande (South Africa).

However, Nyirenda said the availability of Mzava and Ngalande is in doubt.

“Platinum Stars coach insists that Mzava needs to rest having just recovered from a lengthy injury, but we have still asked for his release so that our team doctor can assess him.

“As for Robin, the date of the game clashes with that of Nedbank Cup final in which his team is supposed to play. So, we are still negotiating to see if they can release him, if he will not be in their plans,” said Nyirenda.
